Ask almost anyone in this tiny desert town, and they will tell you providence has endowed their valley with three attributes that produce the world’s most perfect peach.
The first is a warm wind that blows out of neighboring De Beque Canyon in springtime, dispelling frosts that could damage delicate blossoms. Next are the sunny days and cool nights of high-altitude summers, which encourage production of sugars and other compounds that make the fruits teasingly tangy and blissfully sweet.

While farmers have long cultivated peaches in Palisade (the town has held a peach festival every August since 1930), this picturesque corner of Colorado’s Grand Valley, where red rocks frame verdant farm fields, is also known for its grapes. Multiple factors contribute to the area’s ideal fruit-growing conditions, including its proximity to the Colorado River, which runs right through town, and the valley’s alkaline soil. But more frequently credited for Palisade’s sweet bounty is the “million dollar wind.”

From Albuquerque, the drive to Colorado Wine Country is all part of the appeal. In roughly seven hours, the road winds through northern New Mexico and the San Juan Mountains before dropping onto Colorado’s Western Slope. Here, Grand Junction and Palisade anchor the Grand Valley, where orchards and vineyards spread out along the Fruit & Wine Byway. October brings cooler days, grape crush at local wineries and ideal weather for exploring by bike. This year, Colorado’s 150th anniversary offers another reason to celebrate the region’s long agricultural history.

We had the wonderful opportunity of hosting Pam LeBlanc, an adventure, fitness, and travel writer! Powderhorn Mountain Resort brought Pam in for a familiarization tour and then collaborated with the Palisade Chamber of Commerce to develop a three-day itinerary for her to experience Palisade and all of the amazing things it has to offer.

Collaboration with the Colorado Tourism Office
The Colorado Tourism Office collaborated with the Palisade Chamber of Commerce to build an itinerary for Flow Mountain Bike. Flow Mountain Bike covers mountain biking news, technology, and destinations. During their trip to Palisade, the team experienced the Palisade Plunge and Palisade’s local businesses!
