Bringing Tourism Insights Home to Palisade

Last week, Palisade Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Jessica Burford had the opportunity to represent our business community at the Colorado Governor’s Tourism Conference in Breckenridge.

Conferences like this are about much more than professional development. They give the Chamber an opportunity to build relationships, learn from communities across Colorado, and bring valuable information and resources back to Palisade and, most importantly, our members.

Tourism Is Changing

One of the biggest takeaways from this year’s conference was clear: the way people travel is changing.

Across Colorado, visitation is softening, and travelers are becoming increasingly intentional about where they go, when they travel, and how they spend their time and money. At the same time, technology continues to influence how visitors plan their trips. Artificial intelligence is becoming a larger part of how people search for destinations, discover businesses, build itineraries, and make travel decisions.

For communities like Palisade, understanding these shifts is incredibly important.

Our businesses depend on more than simply bringing additional people to town. We want to attract visitors who genuinely value what makes Palisade special and who contribute positively to the community while they are here.

Focusing on High Impact Travelers

Another important conversation at the conference centered around the idea of the “high impact traveler.”

Rather than focusing solely on increasing visitor numbers, destinations are looking more closely at the type of visitor they attract and the impact that visitor has on the community.

High impact travelers may visit during times of the year when businesses need additional traffic, choose locally owned restaurants and shops, participate in local experiences, appreciate agriculture and local culture, and respect the communities they are visiting.

For Palisade, this approach aligns closely with what makes our destination unique.

Our agricultural roots, wineries, orchards, local businesses, outdoor recreation, events, arts, and small-town character create an experience that visitors cannot simply find anywhere else. Protecting those qualities while supporting a strong local economy means thinking intentionally about tourism rather than pursuing growth for growth’s sake.

Bringing Statewide Resources Back to Palisade

The Palisade Chamber’s participation in statewide conversations also gives our community access to a much larger network of knowledge and expertise.

Through relationships with the Colorado Tourism Office, the Colorado Tourism Leadership Journey alumni network, tourism professionals, destination organizations, and business leaders from across the state, we have opportunities to learn from what other Colorado communities are experiencing and doing.

That means access to data about changing visitor behavior, new ideas for destination marketing, conversations about emerging technology like AI, and strategies for encouraging visitation during the times our businesses need it most.

Our responsibility is to bring those connections and insights home and put them to work for our members.

What Does This Mean for Palisade Businesses?

Tourism is an important part of Palisade’s economy, but successful tourism is not simply about attracting more visitors.

It is about attracting the right visitors, at the right times, for the right reasons.

As travel patterns continue to evolve, the Chamber will continue working to understand those changes, connect our members with useful resources, advocate for the needs of our business community, and identify opportunities that strengthen Palisade’s businesses, agriculture, and community.

The conversations happening at the state level matter here at home. By having Palisade represented in those rooms, we can make sure our community remains part of the conversation and that the knowledge gained does not stay at the conference. It comes back to Palisade.

A special thank you to Visit Grand Junction for sponsoring Jessica’s stay at the beautiful Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge and helping make this opportunity possible.

We look forward to continuing to share what we learn, create connections, and turn statewide conversations into local opportunities for our members.
